World Maps Network
World Maps Network is based around a Windows server holding all of the map data, and providing all of the processing power. The server can be connected to any number of clients.
Sitting at any computer on the network, users can access the system simply by calling up a web page on their standard web browser. After logging in, you can either choose from a selection of pre-built templates, or start a new map in a pre-set style for the show you're working on. Creating a map could not be easier: just select the appropriate part of the world, add place names and other details and save the map on the server ready for broadcast. Stunning maps, with texture, relief, lighting and many other striking features can be ready in seconds to illustrate a breaking news story.
You have total control over the actual contents of the map and can highlight countries, regions and towns to illustrate the story. However, users usually have restricted control over the visual style of the map. They can choose only from those styles and templates made available to them - usually under control of the graphics department. Thus, absolute consistency of quality and graphic style is guaranteed.
The Styles and project templates can be created by a graphics professional on the server - using the full design power of Curious World Maps. These can then be made available to individual users as you choose: either the same set of styles and template projects can be made available to all users, or, alternatively, different options can be made selectively available to individual users.
World Maps Network is completely compatible with Curious World Maps, so projects created with World Maps Network can be transferred to Curious World Maps for addition of animation or other layers to illustrate a more complex story as required.
The Workflow
You can configure the workflow to suit your organization's needs, making the power of World Maps available to the staff as and when required.
You can choose to restrict use to graphics department staff only - simply allowing graphic artists to create maps wherever they are in the building, for any programme.
Alternatively, you may choose to make the system available from every video editor's desktop - allowing your editors to make maps instantly as they edit, instead of interrupting their work to visit the graphics department.
You may extend access to editorial staff - allowing editorial assistants or journalists to create maps to illustrate their stories as they are written, so they are ready to go on air or on-line in moments.
In a corporation, executives throughout the organisation can be given access to the highest quality tools to create presentation maps for illustrating strategy presentations, sales plans, reports and more.
Curious World Maps Network allows users to create the highest quality maps with minimal training, and even with little or no graphics experience. A special guest account allows as yet unregistered users the freedom to train on the system without the ability to save maps.
Curious World Maps Network's server provides all of the map-making power and administrative tools. Running on a Windows NT, 2000 or XP platform, the server can fit onto any existing network.
The server holds all of the map data, styles and project templates. All output images are also stored here, or they can be sent elsewhere on the network under control of the system administrator.
Tools provided by the server software include user administration - allowing for any number of user names and passwords. Each user can be given their own set of available styles, projects and folders for saving projects and images, or, alternatively, multiple users can share the same properties.
When the server is online, a visual tool shows all activity, including a picture window for each active client showing all maps currently being created. Images can be saved in many different formats - including .BMP, Targa, TIFF, JPEG and PSD - and projects can be saved for later work, or for transfer to Curious World Maps for the addition of further layers or animation if required.
No software needs to be installed on the client machines, and no content needs to be stored locally. All the user needs to do is log into the server using either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
Up to 10 people can be logged in and creating maps at any one time on a single server. Extra servers can be added to allow increased throughput.
