KOKI FOX23 Lets Curious World Maps
Software Take The Strain

Creating high-impact maps to illustrate breaking local and national news stories used to be a time consuming process for broadcaster KOKI FOX23. But thanks to a recent investment in Curious Software's Curious World Maps, the station's graphic designers now have maps galore at their fingertips.
KOKI FOX23, owned and operated by Clear Channel Communications, airs a mixture of syndicated programmes and FOX network programmes to viewers in Tulsa and the North Eastern part of Oklahoma. Its original programming includes an hour-long newscast every night and half-hour early evening newscasts on weekdays.
Before it acquired Curious World Maps, the broadcaster had to rely on stills created from Adobe Illustrator templates. According to Joel Rorabaugh, Art Director and Broadcast Animator for both KOKI FOX23 and KTFO UPN41, this method was time-consuming and haphazard because it was difficult to create high-quality maps that were consistent in visual style at every scale, from street level to state and national levels.
"Curious Maps has given us the ability to create highly attractive animated maps with minimal effort," Rorabaugh explains. "Although we are still learning how to take full advantage of the software's capabilities, we have successfully finalized a consistent style throughout a variety of templates for our maps and we are truly delighted with the results."
Curious Software's Curious World Maps was launched in 2000 as the solution for creating broadcast quality still and animated maps for television, corporate presentations and the Internet. Since then it has fast become the industry standard enabling graphic departments to create highly detailed, broadcast-quality maps with ease. It has already been installed in many of the world's top broadcast graphics departments, including CNN, ABC, NBC, Sky and the BBC.
KOKI FOX23 first became aware of Curious World Maps in 2003 and applied for a temporary software license, combined with some local street data.
"We were very impressed with the output quality of the software and the wide range of customizable options," Rorabaugh adds. "Curious World Maps allowed us to define and change the styles of maps instantly without having to redraw them. Our decision to invest in the software was based on this positive experience - and on the reports we read from satisfied customers at much larger organizations such as CNN and ABC."
Joel Rorabaugh has worked at KOKI FOX23/KTFO UPN41 for five years and his primary responsibility is to define and monitor the overall visual style used to promote both stations, on and off the air. His job involves creating animated graphics for station identity and promotion, handling informational and promotional animations for the FOX23 newscasts and animated logos and effects for client advertisements.
"At present, we only have Curious Maps Local Edition, GDT street data for Tulsa county and the Curious street data for the rest of Oklahoma," he says. "However, we're so pleased with what we've achieved so far that we may well invest in more options in the future."
