Curious Software has supplied German broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) with an extensive selection of satellite data, which the station is using to bring added realism to its map graphics
Curious Software introduced satellite data as an addition to its basic Curious World Maps software package at last year's IBC exhibition in Amsterdam. After watching a demo, BR placed a large order for highly detailed data covering Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Iraq, Iran and Israel.
Curious Software fulfilled the order at the beginning of 2003 and since then the broadcaster has been creating trial animations using Curious World Maps software, satellite data, Curious' own 3D Export option and 3D Studio Max - a third party 3D animation system.
BR's graphic designer, Heike Steinbach, says: "We plan to use the data to create realistic 2D and 3D animations for a variety of programmes across a number of public television channels, including BR Alpha, The 3rd Programme, ARD and Arte.
These types of illustration are ideal for news and magazine programmes, but are also likely to come into their own on sports programmes such as skiing, bike racing and Formula One."
