The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Uses Curious World Maps To Enhance Its Federal Election Coverage

Toronto - December 4th 2000

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) used Curious World Maps, from Curious Software, to dramatically enhance its coverage of the 2000 federal election. As the results came in from last week's Canadian election each was graphically illustrated with an animated map showing the riding or region involved. This required the preparation of over 300 two-second animations - impossible even to contemplate for previous election coverage. This time around, however, CBC had Curious World Maps. All the animations were generated and ready to go to air in just three days!

Curious World Maps is a powerful software package that enables users such as CBC to create broadcast quality still and animated maps of anywhere in the world quickly and easily. The software includes built in vector databases of the whole world comprising detailed outline data for countries, regions, states and countries, over 150,000 place names including towns, mountains and other physical features, rivers, lakes and roads. Genuine relief data for the whole world as provided by the US Geological Survey is also included.

Joel Thompson, Graphic Designer, at CBC commented: "Curious World Maps has saved me a huge amount of time. Before we started using the software it took us at least an hour to create a map with topography. Now, I can create the same map in under five minutes."

The styles of maps and animations are entirely customizable to fit a house look. At CBC, Joel took full advantage of this to create a 'style sheet' for all the maps. This not only saved him a great deal of time-consuming graphics work but also guaranteed complete consistency map after map after map.

To further enhance the graphic impact of their maps, CBC utilized the comprehensive animation functions of Curious World Maps. Each map started with a view of Canada then zoomed in to an individual riding or region with a Canadian maple leaf symbol fading on as a point marker.

CBC also uses Curious World Maps to produce map graphics for "The National News" specials, "Foreign Assignment" and "On The Road Again".
